Conchero:

[noun, Spanish]

1. Prehistoric deposit of shells and other remains of mollusks and fish that served as food for humans, and that are generally found on the shores of the sea or rivers and near caves or caverns.

Installation part of the project 'La Fultonera'. Inspired by Andrzej & Magdalena Antczak’s research of pre-Hispanic archeological sites in northern Venezuela to understand their prior inhabitants through their mollusk consumption.

I made ten visits to collect bivalve shells gathered by workers at The Fulton and Fulton Fish Company to illustrate human activity at The South Street Seaport through their mollusk consumption.

The installation is comprised by 9 acrylic cubes, each filled with the harvest of 1-day of mollusk-shell collected. It is inspired and takes its name from the concheros (Spanish for shell dunes) studied by Andrzej & Magdalena Antczak.

This project was done as part of my residency at the New York Latin American Art Triennial at Governor's Island. It is a sister project to 'Vestigios de La Fultonera'.
