4:00pm: ÉEK’ en el Dominican Hair Salon: Participatory Installation by María Elena Pombo
In late-sixteenth-century accounts from the Yucatán Peninsula, Spanish colonial officials described a tree whose wood produced black, blue, and purple dyes. They recorded that Maya communities called it éek’, “black,” and used it to dye textiles, threads braided into the hair, and the body. As European demand grew, logwood became a valuable and contested colonial commodity, and the tree was introduced throughout the Caribbean.
ÉEK’ en el Dominican Hair Salon is a site-specific installation in the garden of a Dominican hair salon that creates ephemeral space around logwood and the histories it carries. The installation uses silk dyed with logwood sourced from Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
Visitors are invited to move through the installation and take part in a limited distribution of logwood water, fabric, and a small accompanying zine. Participation is free with RSVP, and materials will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
5:00pm: Mother Wound: Poetry Reading by Gauri Awasthi
Gauri Awasthi will read poems from her debut poetry collection, Mother Wound, released on Oct 1, 2026.
Structured around the rhythm cycle of Indian classical music, SA-RE-GA-MA-PA-DHA-NI-SA, Mother Wound examines the inheritance of trauma through the lens of a daughter. Moving through the meaning of each note, the book traces cycles of memory, family, and generational transmission between women.
5:30pm: From Fort Tilden to Fuerte Quebracho: Film Screening by Maco Díaz
Screening of From Fort Tilden to Fuerte Quebracho follows the transformation of an abandoned military structure at Fort Tilden into María Elena Pombo’s site-specific installation Fuerte Quebracho, and its activation in collaboration with performance laboratory gmtc and sound artist Isaac Silber.
The film is a portrait of the work in becoming: the movement of fabric, the gestures of construction, the surrounding landscape, and the people who gather within it. Turning her gaze toward the textures and moments between process and finished installation, Díaz follows the work as it takes shape and comes alive through sound, water, and collective presence.
6:00pm: tanto te he querido: Performance by iiisa
iiisa will perform work from their recently released EP, tanto te he querido.
Merging field recordings, poemsongs, and familial voices from their home in Costa Rica, iiisa builds memory portals for the kindling of transformation. Their “pliable and fearless voice” (I Care If You Listen) emerges from beds of distortion and abstracted environments, guiding the listener through ephemeral vignettes.
